Truth or Consequences

The Redefining of Truth
History is the benchmark from which we survey the future. Yet, we live in a day when history is often revised and fabricated by unscrupulous individuals.

Years ago I was privileged to obtain a facsimile edition of the 1828 edition of Noah Webster’s Dictionary and it has remained one of my favorite resource books. But it is more than a dictionary; it is an archive of truth that helps preserve our very foundations!

For example, in the Webster 1828 dictionary, the word immoral is defined as:
 1.  Inconsistent with moral rectitude; contrary to the moral or divine law; wicked; unjust; dishonest; vicious. Every action is immoral which contravenes any divine precept, or which is contrary to the duties which men owe to each other.
 2.  Wicked or unjust practice;  vicious; dishonest; as a immoral man. Every man who violates a  divine law or a social duty is immoral, but we particularly apply the term to a person who habitually violates the law (underline added).

Though most of us have not deeply considered importance of the dictionary or that the very definitions of words in the dictionary are being changed, in fact they are! In 1828, immorality was defined according to God’s unchanging law. But now, in the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, it is defined as “conflicting with generally or traditionally held moral principles.” We see that the reference to “divine law” as a source for moral principles has been replaced with “generally” and “traditionally” held principles. This simple change moves morality from an absolute truth defined by God’s law to a relative issue open to interpretation.

Am I reading too much into this slight change? Not at all! The Cambridge Dictionary defines immoral as “not within society's standards of acceptable, honest and moral behaviour; morally wrong:
an immoral act. ... It's an immoral tax, because the poor will pay relatively more.” (underline added).  Here we see that the definition of  immorality is clearly based on what society believes is acceptable, not what God says is acceptable. You might have also noticed that this definition uses a contextual example that carries a socialistic slant.

In this same dictionary, the word moral makes this shift from absolute divine law to relative humanism (from what God says to what man says) even more clear. Moral is defined as, “1. relating to the standards of good or bad behaviour, fairness, honesty, etc. which each person believes in, rather than to laws. 2. behaving in ways considered by most people to be correct and honest...” (underline added).

Humanism and Lawlessness
Who are these people who redefine history and our very language? Who do they think they are!
Well, in short, they think they are god. That is what humanism is, man acting as God. Humanism ultimately leads to lawlessness and anarchy, because men are unchecked internally by the law of God in their hearts. But when the folly of lawlessness is seen, and a nation begins to self-destruct, its population will likely submit to increased external government and even a dictator as an alternative to disorder and lawlessness. Either way the result is bigger and bigger government.
Of course, there is an other alternative. That is the internal government of the Holy Spirit in my heart, your heart, and in the hearts of all whom we win to Christ. Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty (2 Cor 3:17).

A nation or a people cannot survive without absolutes, and truth is absolute. We use words to communicate truth, therefore redefining words is redefining truth. Redefining truth (and lies in general) has serious consequences; it removes a culture’s foundation from solid bed rock and places it on shifting sand.. We must have accurate uncensored history, an unchanging constitution, an unshakable belief and trust in God. The Bible is God’s word and defines truth. We must not be afraid align ourselves with it. We must be willing to take a stand for truth. That is why we are here.
